Can You Sign Up For Health Insurance After Open Enrollment?
This year’s health coverage Open Enrollment Period ended on January 31st. For most, that means the opportunity to buy health insurance is now pretty limited for the rest of the year. If you missed the deadline and don’t have your own qualified coverage, you could be looking at penalties. Ugh. It may all feel less-than-human-friendly. But all hope is not lost! You may still have a few cards to play. And at BuyHealthInsurance, we’ve made a point of perfecting the game.
If you’re Native American, and a member of a recognized Indian tribe, band, or nation, you can enroll year-round. Your options change depending on your income.
You’ll be able to enroll all year for free or low-cost coverage through Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). See if you qualifybefore you apply.
If you experience a qualifying event, you gain access to a special 60-day enrollment window to shop for plans.
If none of these options are open to you, you can’t get insurance outside of open enrollment. Nevada’s the exception: off-exchange plans there are available all year, but carriers can impose a 90-day waiting period. This is a situation that has taken many people by surprise. If you’re finding yourself surprised, confused, and without coverage, you’re not alone. And there is cause for confusion: even though the 2017 open enrollment period followed the same schedule as 2016, the first three open enrollment periods all had different start and end dates. For 2018, Health and Human Services (HHS) will keep the same dates: November 1 to January 31. But it will change again after that, and what with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) under the Trump Administration, a lot is still uncertain these days in terms of what happens next. We know we don’t need to tell you that.Bottom line: if you missed the deadline and aren’t covered by a qualifying event, you’re limited to policies unregulated by the ACA for the rest of the year: short-term health insurance, limited-benefit plans, accident supplements, critical/specific-illness policies, dental/vision plans, and medical discount plans. For every problem, there is a solution, even if it’s not what you imagined it should be. Give us a call today to make the best of whatever situation you’re dealing with. We’ve got you covered, regardless. And we’re very human-friendly.
